Costs of study, student income, and study behaviour in Denmark.
This report is the Danish contribution to a project in 1997/98 at the University of Kassel, Germany, on "Costs of Study, Student Income and Study Behaviour: A Comparative Study in the European Community".
The report is organised in 10 chapters according to the structure and themes laid down by the project leaders. The extent and content of the different chapters therefore varies according to the relevance of the items concerned within a Danish context and the amount of data available.
The first two chapters consist of a general introduction in chapter 1, and a short description of the Danish system of higher education in chapter 2.
Chapter 3 contains available information on student expenditure, which is very sparse, as this area within a Danish context is very little investigated.
The next five chapters deal with student income from different sources. In chapter 4 the Danish State Educational Grants and Loans Scheme is described supplemented with data on the total amount of direct state economic support in 1996 and its distribution among the students. This economic support along with the students’ own income from gainful employment is the most important source of income for Danish students.
Chapters 5, 6 and 7 describe other direct and indirect economic support for students, the role of higher educational institutions in this economic support and parental support, all of which is of very little importance in the overall picture of student finances in Denmark.
Chapter 8 deals with the other main source of economic support, the financial contribution of the students themselves in the form of income from gainful employment during the period of study.
Chapter 9 is an evaluation of the findings of expenditures and income and a general assessment of the effects of the system of study finances. Finally, a historical review of the developments in the field of economic support of students since the 1960s is found in chapter 10.
